German Gold Coins
Popular German gold coins are the Prussian Gold Coins, German Gold Marks, Gold German Thalers, German Gold Euros of more recent times.
Prussian gold coins are the most commonly found gold coins of German states. This is because Prussia was the richest, largest, and most influential state. Also, in 1871, the German empire was united under the Prussian king, Wilhelm I.
The most popular German gold coins are the 20 marks of Prussia. Less commonly encountered are the 10 and 5 mark coins.
The 20 Mark pieces of Prussia were issued from 1871 to 1887 (Wilhelm I) and 1888-1915 (Wilhelm II). After WWI begain in July of 1914, Germany's central bank decided to remove the nation from the gold standard. This turned out to be an ill-fated decision.
Minting of the gold 20 mark coin ceased completely during this time. The 20 gold Mark had been the backbone of Germany's economy since 1871. Minted from 1888 to 1915, the German Wilhelm II gold 20 mark traces its roots back to the grand period of the Prussian monarchy.
Any citizen who was smart enough to store their wealth in these historic gold coins was able to protect themselves from the devasting effects of hyperinflatio which followed.
