Venezuela 60 Bolivares Gold CoinSouth American Gold coins are often overlooked by both casual investors and collectors. However, there are quite a few valuable coins from Latin America that can be had for competitive prices. South America, in general, has a great wealth of gold and silver mines. Therefore, it's only natural that countries such as Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, and others would have minted some decent specimens.

Here are a few that may be worth taking a look at.

Mexican peso coins, for example are often widely available, and dependent on the exchange rate can be quite a bargain. Typically they'll contain less fine gold quality wise, say .90 pure, although they typically are of decent quality, and make a good deal. Ideally, anything from the 1930's or before that is a safe bet.

Brazil also has some respectable deals if you look for them. The Empire of Brazil 20,000 Reis coins were minted between 1851 and 1889 and weigh in at a fineness of .917, for a total of a little over one half troy ounce of total gold. These are relatively easy to get your hands on, although you may again have to pay a premium due to heavier world wide demand for physical gold due to the economy.

Columbia has some decent examples as well, notably the 1973 1500 Peso gold coin. At a purity of .90 and containing almost three quarters of an ounce of pure gold, it's an incredibly beautiful specimen with a low mintage of just under 5,000, making it an attractive collectible due to the relative rarity.

Venezuelan gold coins are similarly rare, the Venezelanos being minted only in 1875. Aside from that somewhat obscure coin, the Bolivares coins, from 1904 and 1930 are also available, also at a purity of .90, with total gold amounts ranging from .10 to .20 troy ounces of gold content per coin. Typically these would trade in the $100 to $200 dollar range, subject to rising or falling gold prices.

Those are just a few of the many quality gold coins available to invest in from South and Central America. In such a short space there isn't enough time to go over the wide variety of fine investments that can be made in this area, so some additional research is necessary before you sink real money into it. But for the astute collector, Latin American gold coins can be a great buy if you know what to look for.
