Venezuela Gold CoinsVenezuela Gold Coins, the ties of a country

Although South America has a rich history of gold statues and idols in ancient religion, the first currencies were actually items such as pearls, foods, and natural products of the surrounding environment. Many gold disks and ornaments were created but none were used in the form of currency.

The first Venezuelan gold coins were minted from 1821 to 1830, this era was known as The Great Columbia time, it was the period of the union between Columbia, Ecuador and Venezuela. These coins were minted from Bogota and Pompaya, and represented the new union.

In the year 1865 the United States of Venezuela minted the first gold coins to display the face of Simon Bolivar with the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS DE VENEZUELA” (United States of Venezuela) on the opposite side. However in the year 1953 when the new constitution came about, the countries' name was changed again and this was replaced by the words “REPUBLICA DE VENEZUELA” (Republic of Venezuela) the countries coins were then minted in silver and nickel.

Today’s Venezuelan currency is primarily printed in nickel and clad steel, making the first minted coins of gold a rare collectable. Venezuela has a rich history of gold but her ancient peoples found the items needed in day to day life a more valuable commodity.
