For the uninitiated, Palladium bullion coins may sound like an obscure, rather esoteric investment. But since 1967, a number of countries have issued these coins through their respective national mints and they are now an internationally recognized form of currency.

Also frequently available in bar form, palladium is cheaper than gold, though it makes a sound investment due to volatility, as it is used in catalytic converters and other industrial equipment, making it dependent on rising and falling auto markets.

As with many other precious metals, the Palladium Canadian Maple Leaf is one of the best overall coins to invest in with respect to this particular commodity.

At a typical 99.95% pure, they're about as high quality a palladium coin as you can get. The Royal Canadian Mint issues more exclusive coins known as Big Bear and Little Bear Constellation coins, which are limited to 1200 issued a year, 300 for each season.

Demand is high for palladium at the moment, and while it waxes and wanes through time, they are a hot, if overlooked commodity. Credit Suisse and PAMP (Produits Artistiques Metaux Precieux), also of Switzerland, issue 1 and 10 ounce palladium bars, at 99.95% purity. These too are a great investment tool if you get in at the right time. And their record for quality is unimpeachable.

Unfortunately, the United States Mint does not currently issue palladium coins or bars, although legislation has been introduced recently to do just that.

If this does go through, American Eagle coins in palladium form will no doubt be another high quality investment, as are the gold, silver and platinum forms.

Palladium can be a somewhat more high risk investment, and you need to really keep an eye on current prices to determine when to acquire these coins. But if you know what you're doing, they're a terrific commodity and currency to play with.
