American Silver Eagle CoinThe U.S. Mint has already begun rationing the 2011 American Silver Eagles to its authorized dealers. This is because the U.S. Mint had 469,500 2010 Silver Eagles leftover at the end of the year.

The U.S. Mint wanted its authorized dealers to purchase the remaining supply so they are required to purchase one 2010 American Silver Eagle coins for each 5 2011 Silver Eagles that they buy.

This is nothing new as the U.S. Mint did the same thing at the beginning of 2010.

How long will this Silver Eagle rationing last? No one knows at this point but in 2010, the rationing lasted until the end of August.

The 2011 American Silver Eagle went on sale to authorized dealers on January 3, 2011.  No sales figures are available yet, but in 2010, 34,662,500 American Silver Eagles were sold. This marks the 3rd straight yearly gain!
