Silver Eagle Coins
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Congress approved the mintage of the gold and silver eagle in 1985 and it was first released by the U.S. Mint in 1986. The American Silver Eagle is the only coin whose weight and purity is guaranteed by the United States government.
The American Silver Eagle is credited as being the best selling silver coin in the world. Since its release in 1986, over 130 million have been sold. It is struck only in 1 troy oz denominations and has a face value of $1.
The obverse design of the American Silver Eagle features the classic "walking liberty" designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The 'walking liberty' design was originally used on the US half dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. This was arguably the most popular design ever featured on a U.S. silver coin; hence the choice of this design for the silver eagle.
The reverse side features a heraldic eagle with a shield, olive branch, and arrows and was designed by John Mercanti.
The American Silver Eagle bullion coin may be used to fund an IRA (individual retirement account).
The Silver Eagle, traditionally has been produced at three mints - the Philadelphia mint, the San Francisco mint, and the West Point mint in New York. The US mint also produces a proof version for coin collectors.
