The Canadian Silver 25 Cent coin came about as a result of the creation of the Canadian Confederation and resulting formation of the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867.

Responsibility for the banking system and creation of money now belonged to the central government. The very first silver 25 cent pieces were issued, along with 5, 10, and 50 cent denominations in 1870.

In Canada, the coin with the most frequently changed reverse side is the 25 cent piece. Most commemorative issues utilize the quarter.

• The 2004 Remembrance Day issue featured a red poppy on the reverse. This was the very first coin issued for general circulation in the world that was colorized.
• The 1992 125th Anniversary of Confederation commemorative featured 12 coins, one for each of the Canadian provinces and territories. These commemoratives inspired the 1999-2008 United States Fifty State Quarter program.
• The Royal Canadian Mint began issuing colorized quarters to commemorate Canada Day in 2000. The designs were targeted to attract younger collectors.
