American Eagle Gold CoinsIntroduced in 1986, the American Eagle Gold bullion coin is the world's most widely traded gold bullion coin. It is the only gold bullion coin whose content, purity, and weight is guaranteed by the government of the United States. Only gold mined in the U.S. is used in minting the American Gold Eagle.

The American Gold Eagle is made of 22-karat gold. An additional alloy of silver and copper is added to the coin to make it more wear-resistant. These alloys make the gold much more scratch resistant than twenty-four carat gold.

The gold American Eagle bullion coin is produced each year in four sizes and denominations:

The obverse design features a full-length rendition of lady liberty, designed by Augustus St. Gauden in 1907, with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the capitol building in the left background.

The reverse design, created by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.

The market value of the American Eagle Gold coin is generally about equal to the market value of itsr gold content, not its face value.  Its actual selling price can vary on a daily basis, depending upon on the current spot price of gold.
