$1 Dollar Liberty Head Gold Coins The Liberty Head $1 Gold Dollar coin was first minted in 1849, during the boom years of the great California Gold Rush. During this time, gold was being mined in massive quantities.

As a result, influential and powerful gold lobbiest were able to get legislation passed before the end of the year for the production of a United States gold dollar coin. The result of the bill was the Liberty Head gold dollar coin or as it is sometimes called the Coronet Head gold dollar coin.

Designed by James B. Longacre, the new gold coin featured an obverse of a Liberty bust facing right and surrounded by stars. Her pointed headband featured the word "LIBERTY."

The reverse side of the coin featured the words "One Dollar" and the date contained inside a laurel wreath.

The Liberty Head gold dollar was struck at five different mints:

  1. Philadelphia - no mintmark
  2. New Orleans - O mintmark
  3. Dahlonega, GA - D mintmark
  4. San Francisco - S mintmark
  5. Charlotte, North Carolina - C mintmark

The Liberty Head gold dollars that were struck in Philadelphia had the highest mintage. Those coins that were struck at the Charlotte, NC and Dahlonega, GA had the lowest mintage, of just several thousand coins produced.

The Liberty Head gold dollar coin was minted from 1849 to 1854. It contained 1.6720 grams of gold and was only 13 mm. in diameter.
