$2.50 Quarter Eagle Gold Coin

The $2.50 Quarter Gold Eagle coin was authorized by the 1792 Coinage Act.  However the first Quarter Eagle was not minted until 1796, four years later, at the Philadelphia Mint.  Only small quantities were produced for 38 years, until 1834.

This is why the earlier dated Quarter Gold Eagles are so hard to find and sought after.  The design of this lovely coin changed throughout the years.  The very first 1796 Quarter Eagle had a composition of .9167 find gold.

However, by 1834, it's composition had changed to .8992 fine gold.  Three years later, in 1837, Congress upped the gold purity amount to .900, a level that remained until the discontinuation of the coin.

The gold content of these coins is practically irrelevant and has little bearing on the price they can command, due to the rarity and scarcity of any surviving examples. There are a few interesting historical explanations for the absence of a large number of Quarter Eagle coins in private hands. A higher exchange rate between gold and silver in Great Britain as opposed to the United States during the 1830's and 1840's, and the slightly higher gold content of the coins themselves, led many to melt them down for bullion and profit, rather than merely use them as a medium of exchange.

In short, the $2.50 Quarter Eagle gold coins, aside from being worth far more than their stated face value, are a smart choice for anyone looking to get into precious metals. But make no mistake, this is a niche market. You're not going to find a tremendous amount of these beauties floating around for sale. But if you can pick some up, it's a great acquisition for history buffs, collectors, and investors alike.
